Cheryl Besner: Love yourself on Valentine’s Day!
It’s Friday, two days before a day of love that is celebrated by so many. Of course, I’m talking about Valentine’s Day – when we wake up in the morning, look at our beloved, and spend the day commemorating our love for each other.
When we were children, our parents gave us chocolates and cards telling us how much they loved us . We went to school and distributed endless pop-out cards to our classmates, sometimes wanting one classmate in particular to be our valentine. As we grew up, February 14th would find us looking around at our friends who had boyfriends or girlfriends, wishing we had somebody to take us out on a date on this special day.
Fast forward to now… You’re a mature, solo-in-the-city individual watching the clock slowly count down the hours to February 14th.
Ask yourself this question: Who is the one person you have to love more than anyone else?
You got it! That person is YOU!
Valentine’s Day is about reminding the people you love why you love them and how deeply you care for them. I think that you should start the day by reminding yourself of who you are and what it is you love about yourself – and then treating yourself the way you know you should be treated!
Imagine getting up on Sunday morning, looking in the mirror, and saying “Happy Valentine’s Day to me! I am really proud of who I am and know I deserve to have an amazing day!”
Why not give yourself a hug for all that you have accomplished and give yourself the love you need? After all, the word “loveable” comes from the joining of two strong words: love and able. You need to be able to love yourself to really be loveable in a couple!
As there are still two days ’til this romantic day, I challenge you to do something special for yourself. Something that says “I love ME!”
When you are proactive about all aspects of your life, you will never feel lonely, even if you happen to be alone. Should you want company, you can reach out to friends and plan a little wine and cheese get-together. If it’s alone time that you cherish, take yourself for a walk as the sun goes down, then enjoy a bubble bath complete with candles, a glass of wine, and your favorite music.
There are endless ways in which you can honour yourself this Valentine’s Day, and nowhere is it written that you must include another person. Being alone gives you carte blanche to do anything and everything that YOU love!
So, now that you have my challenge, I would like to extend an invitation!
I will be flying solo this Saturday night, celebrating Valentine’s Day with a live Solo in the City broadcast from the Plateau Lounge at Montreal’s W Hotel. Tune in to CJAD800 at 10 PM, or check out the details on our events calendar and come join me, my friends, and many other Solos for what is sure to be a fun night! You’ll have the chance to try out a brand new app called “Be My Guest” as the creators give us a sneak preview of the best new way to ask someone out on a date!
