Cheryl Besner: 6 tips for a picture perfect profile
“A picture is worth a thousand words…” and that’s the first impression when it comes to creating your online profile!
Let’s “face” it… literally! No matter what scenario you are met with when it comes to introducing yourself, any business or life coach will tell you to put your best foot forward and make a good first impression – and, like it or not, that means your appearance. The way we look, groom, dress, carry ourselves, and present ourselves is key to grabbing someone’s attention.
So how do you do that when it come to online dating ? Simple! Make sure you convey enough about yourself so that the person on the other end of that cyber wire reaches out, yet keep it short and sweet. The message you want to give is “The best is yet to come, to know me is to love me, so let’s meet!”
Here are 6 simple guidelines on how to choose your online photos – and remember, 2-3 photos are enough!
1) No six-packs on display: Most of us don’t have the rockin’ body we once had or dream of having. Even if we do, we should show some discretion and leave something to the imagination. People don’t walk the streets in a bathing suit, so leave the bikini or trunks for the pool date or the first intimate moment you may share someday.
2) No community photos: Don’t post pictures with others and hope someone guesses which one is you. Posting pictures with your kids is also a no-no. If you have kids, mention them in your status, but leave children’s identities private, to be shared at a later time.
3) No pets: Many people don’t like animals, and if they see a dog, may not even reach out. Cats are often associated with reclusiveness or eccentricity (although I own a cat and am very normal!) so no cats, either. People will often not date someone with a pet – however, if they meet someone they are attracted to who happens to own one, they won’t break it off! So don’t let the cat out of the bag… yet!
4) Be natural: Be who you are and the best of who you are. Men, if you wear a beard and like it, don’t shave it! Women, don’t go getting professional makeup and lash extensions. Know how you look your best, show you take pride in yourself, and snap that picture! Nothing too posed; the best pictures are the ones your friends take of you, as you are probably at your most relaxed. The key is to smile BIG!
If using a professional shot, try and keep it natural. (There are companies that specialize in shooting profile headshots, which you can find online. Solo in the City also provides that service in Montreal!)
5) Don’t do the glamour and high-maintenance routine: Don’t wear too much jewelry, and try to avoid the big fancy car and yacht shots. If you have the means to afford these luxuries, you don’t want someone dating you for the wrong reasons. If you’re just posing in front of someone else’s property, it screams “wannabe” or that you are phony.
6) Action shots: Show your interests! If you like biking, tennis or hiking, get a shot of you holding your racquet or standing next to your bike. This showcases your hobbies, and you will probably be smiling since you’re doing something you love. It’s a natural way to also do a full body shot and show off your assets if you so choose (and more discreet than the six pack no-no!)
The picture-perfect photo should leave the person on the other end of the computer captivated at first glance and knowing a little something about you. A good photo will have them wanting more, and the only way to get more is to… Get up, get out and get social… and get to the date!
Remember to….
Keep it simply social …
We all know it’s all about the KISS!
