1 + 1 = 2? Algorithms of love!

1 + 1 = 2? Algorithms of love!

This week on Solo in the City, the question of the week is…can algorithms lead to a better way to date? Can they help us select our mates more effectively than natural chemistry? It’s the clash of the sciences: Computing vs. chemistry! And when both ingredients are in the mix, we have a “genius” relationship ready to be born!

According to IBM president and CEO Ginni Rometty, devices like Watson (“a cognitive system that enables a new partnership between people and computers”) can be a better tools for analyzing who we are and helping us find a match than ourselves! The reasoning, quite simply: It takes the emotion and desire out of the “equation” and detects an individual’s needs based on our own rhythmic patterns.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but that probably had something to do with fact that I failed math in grade 9 and sucked at everything dealing with science. The fact is, there have been many studies that show this method can work. The idea was dealt with as part of a TED talk given by Amy Webb, author of “Data, A Love Story: How I Gamed Online Dating to Meet My Match”:

This week on Solo in the City Radio, we go into the laboratory of Darwin Ecosystems with owner Thierry Hubert to discuss how we can “multiply” our chances for love by “adding” specially-selected people to our lives. There seems no “minus” to trying new technology like this…so why not “divide” and conquer using all that technology has to offer to help us find “sum”-one special?

Listen tomorrow night to hear what Theirry Hubert has to share with all of us flying solo!

Have a great weekend!
