Cheryl Besner: Fit at 50 and Menopause – Mind over Matter?

Cheryl Besner: Fit at 50 and Menopause – Mind over Matter?

As we can all agree, 50+ dating has its share of challenges, and we women have the added “bonus” of the big M… MENOPAUSE!

It can be hard to feel attracting and attractive in the midst of hot flashes and spontaneous tears!  Sexual relationships can also run into speedbumps, as your body chemistry is changing. And if that isn’t enough, we have to face the mountain of (mostly male) misconceptions about menopause – everything from “wild mood swings” to “the loss of desire” to “drying up – literally!”

But take it from me – it is totally possible to enjoy the rewarding physical aspects of a relationship even while navigating these new waters within your body.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to take CARE of yourself! Eat well, keep active, and be responsive to your own needs. If you need to blast the A/C in the middle of winter, go ahead and do it! Are a massage and mani-pedi just the ticket to helping you feel like yourself again? Schedule them now!

And, of course, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Confide in your girlfriends – they may have been there or ARE there, and will have advice and ways to maintain a fabulous state of mind! Approach your doctor if you’re feeling too overwhelmed. There are so many options out there to keep you feeling on track during this time of change.

I particularly LOVE this video from Ellen Dolgen. It explains the symptoms of menopause in a cute and funny way – not an easy task, as menopause can feel anything BUT cute and funny!

Ellen’s eBook “Menopause Mondays: The Girlfriend’s Guide to Surviving and Thriving During Perimenopause and Menopause” is an excellent resource – the next best thing to a heart-to-heart with your best friend! It is available as a free download on her website, and I highly recommend it.

As for those “misconceptions”? Teach by example!  Remember – and project – everything that makes you vibrant. Nurture your sensual side and indulge in your fun, flirty side. Keep the lines of communication open with your partner and let him know that you’re happy to answer any of his questions. Show him – and the world – that midlife can be your best life yet!

Speaking of midlife, I’m excited to share that I’ve begun a new midlife regime!

You’ve followed me as I’ve worked on my heart, soul and mind… well, now it’s time to work on my body!

I’m thrilled to be supported by Victoria Park Health Club and Otago in my new quest to get fit and eat healthy.

During the course of this journey, I will be completely transparent about what I have to do in order to achieve my goal. I think it’s important in order to encourage others who are on a similar path!

Otago is also all about transparency in their food. With their meal service, I can be assured that every bite is not only healthy, but perfectly delicious.

Over at Victoria Park, my “concierge to a better me”, Drea Wheeler, has put together a challenging exercise plan to get in me in the best shape of my life.

Otago says “unseal the real” – I say “unleash the real, better you!” Let’s do it together!

Be sure to tune in to Solo in the City Radio this Saturday as we discuss menopause and being Fit at 50. And, as always, check in with our KISS calendar as your fit self remembers to Keep It Simply Social!
